Bone Marrow Drive

When: Sunday - Feb 10, 2008 12-4pm

The North Hollywood Vietnamese Evangelical Church in Arleta will be sponsoring a Bone Marrow Registration Drive in conjunction with our Lunar New Year Celebration.

The Bone Marrow Registration Drive is in honor of Mrs. Hang Nguyen, the wife of Tai Nguyen, a former member of our church. She is currently undergoing treatment for Leukemia.

The New Year Celebration will be on Sunday February 10th from 12 to 4:00 pm. There will be free Vietnamese food and entertainment. The address is 9936 Beachy Ave. in Arleta, near the intersection of Van Nuys Blvd. and Beachy Ave. We are urging all members of the Vietnamese community to come register to be a Bone Marrow Donor. There is a desperate need for Asian Bone Marrow Donors, especially Vietnamese donors. The donor drive with be conducted by A3M (Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches). http://www.asianmarrow.org

The main reason for the shortage of donors is the misconception involving the expense, pain and, difficulty in registering. Because of the critical shortage of donors, registration for Asians is free. You only need to fill out a short form; and submit a tissue sample (wiping the inside of the mouth with a cotton swab), that’s it, that’s all it takes. You’re now registered. If and when you are matched with a patient needing a transplant, you will be contacted. At that time you can decide if you want to continue, or not with the actual transplant. The transplant procedures are also much simpler than most people think. One method is extracting the marrow from the hip bone with a syringe. The second method is performed by drawing some of your blood, filtering out what is needed, then returning your own blood back to you. In either case there is not a long hospital stay, and no cost to you. Your body will replenish itself in a few weeks. Any discomfort should also be gone by then. Isn’t that such a small price to save a life?
